Singer-songwriter-guitarist Phil Circle is a Chicago-based independent artist with 30+ years of frontline experience, an award-winning book on his journey so far, a successful music coaching studio, a new podcast, and a with multiple critically acclaimed albums to his credit, he’s gone and released a new EP with a slightly different story behind it.
It goes like this:
Phil Circle decided to buy a new guitar. This may not seem out of the ordinary, but he's a utilitarian musician. He's been playing the same 1985 Yaeri-Alvarez acoustic for decades and only recently has picked up a couple Breedloves as back-ups for open tuning and string breakage. This most recent purchase was thoroughly out of the ordinary. He decided to grab a high end Ibanez acoustic electric cutaway BARITONE GUITAR. Just to clarify, this is a sort of hybrid between a bass and a standard guitar, with six strings tuned in the same intervals, but much lower than a standard 6-string (a perfect 4th for those in the know). He bought this guitar with one purpose in mind: He wanted to explore new creative ideas and somehow felt that this instrument would challenge him in new ways. Five songs poured forth in short order. Then Phil was speaking to his long time friend (and subject of a couple stories in Phil's book) Ted Wulfers (the songwriter behind the cult hit "The Cubs Won It All in 2016"). Ted has a studio. In California. Phil has a credit card and a wife who's an actor. Three days after their conversation, Phil Circle was booked to fly to Los Angeles and record in Ted's studio while Phil's wife did actor stuff. Between March 3rd and 8th, with Phil on guitars and voice and Ted as the rest of the band and engineer, they produced a 23 minute story in five songs. Ted calls it "a love letter to Phil's baritone guitar." Phil calls it a wonderful departure from his past works.
BARITONES 61.7 is being released digitally and on CD, with a vinyl release this summer. “61.7” refers to the speed of the sound wave (hertz) produced by the lowest string on the baritone guitar. Just to point out, Phil is also a baritone.
The songs are designed to be heard in order, but each stands alone. Here are the tracks with brief descriptions provided by Phil (because you're going to create your own story):
1) It's Just Me: An intimate solo guitar and vocal number that starts with declaring "I just want to tell a story about somebody else" and plays through the songwriting process with a wisp of humor.
2) Simple: An 8-minute beautifully meandering diptych that explores the multitude of questions posed in this journey of love and the spirit, and the often final simplicity of it all.
3) One More Man: A sometimes cautious, sometimes declarative song, as this man deals with the increasingly overwhelming world we live in and the search for one's true self amidst billions of closely connected humans.
4) Lava: A primal and rattling blues thumper that warns anyone who gets in the way of one's determination to survive, to win in life.
5) Like A Hammer: An anthemic admission of weakness overcome, sharing that one ultimately wins in the realization that resilience is key.
