With all the talk around McMains’ ancestry, being the direct descendent of Mary Hatfield, Devil Anse Hatfield’s wife, and Mick’s great grandmother, and his actually addressing some of the dark past of his Southern heritage in “Devil Don’t Care,” the second cut on his critically received second solo album American Soul, the singer-songwriter is more interested in expressing the core issues of a life. He is the sweet poet, full of wit and insight and the melodies to draw your attention to them. He laughingly admits to “liking pretty music.”
McMains is an L.A. Music Critic’s Music Award double nominee and Rockwired‘s Top 20 Artists that Rocked in 2018 as well as a Solo Artist of the Year nominee, McMains’ can be heard with his recording of “I Walk Alone” in The Switch, starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman; and with “Sexy, Sexy” in the film Hard Breakers; and now here in his rich and persuasive “Since I Started Loving You” the music video for the song of the same name on American Soul. The video just released on Valentine’s Day, 2019, was impressively partnered with the Americana Daily, an important voice in the American music scene.
Recently opening for Martha Davis and the Motels at the Rose in Pasadena, McMains, a DC native longtime Southern California resident, has toured Europe as bassist with the punk band The Generators, spent two years as the vocalist for Earl Slick's NYC band, another two as the lead guitarist with Englishman John Wicks’ The Records; and was involved with art music ensemble DJ Monkey, co-producing two of their critically acclaimed albums. He is also a member of The McMains Brothers, a popular roots act in Southern California.

His fun, everyone has been there, Don’t Say Good Night Tonight reached the #1 spot (most downloaded cut) on the Airplay Express Top 40 chart in 2017, leading to the anticipation of his first solo CD since Guitar Love in 2012, called American Soul, on Welland International, and released this past May. “Would If I Could,” the first track on the CD went Top 10 on New Music Weekly’s Country Internet Charts in July, and went Platinum at Airplay Express, landing the #1 spot on their download chart for 2018.
